New Delhi: Will the Congress play its ultimate trump card to wrest Uttar Pradesh? There are subtle hints from the horses' mouth about such a possibility and given the desperate situation the Congress is in, trying to take over Lucknow by hook or by crook, it is possible that the party will project Rahul Gandhi as its chief ministerial candidate in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
The first hint in this regard came from no less than the Prime Minister himself. His now-famous quote on Saturday that UP desperately "needs a forward-looking and modern leadership and people of the state need a government that will invest in their future" is now seen as the party's first move to taste the waters.
Then on Monday, RJD leader and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad added further fuel to the rumours, saying the Congress and his party might jointly project Rahul as the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.
"Rahul Gandhi is already projected as the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh," Lalu said in Varanasi. Lalu was in Varanasi along with his family members to participate in the ‘Rudra Abishekh' and `Magla Aarti' in the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
Lalu also confirmed his party's electoral pact with the Congress, and said they would do everything possible to highlight the failures of the Mulayam government during the campaign.
