India vs Pakistan Head-to-Head in ICC T20 World Cups Over the Years
Group A favourites Team India is set to take on arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9 at 8 PM at New York's Nassau County Stadium.

New York is set to host one of the most anticipated clashes of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. India and Pakistan will lock horns for the eighth time in the T20 World Cups. India are coming off a dominating win over Ireland in their tournament opener while Pakistan endured an embarrassing super-over defeat to the less-fancied USA. With USA winning two matches in the group, this game becomes crucial for Pakistan to keep their chance of Super 8 qualification.

India have been the dominant team in IND vs PAK T20 World Cup encounters with a one-sided record win-loss record of 6-1. Here’s a look back at all the previous encounters of the two nations in T20 World Cups over the years.

IND vs PAK T20 World Cup 2007 (Group stage)

The two team’s first encounter in the T20 World Cup 2007 came in the group stages and it was a memorable one at Kingsmead in Durban, South Africa. After winning the toss, Pakistan put India into bat and were restricted to 141/9 courtesy Mohammad Asif’s (eventual Player of the Match) incredible spell of 4-1-18-4. For India, Robin Uthappa top-scored with 39-ball 50, while MS Dhoni added 33 off 31. In the chase, Pakistan never got going and found themselves tottering at 87/5 with Irfan Pathan picking up 2/20, before Misbah-ul-Haq revived Pakistan’s innings with a 35-ball 53 and Pakistan levelled scores in their allotted 20 overs, leading to the second-ever tied match in T20I history.

But there was more drama and to determine the winner, India and Pakistan played a bowl out – akin to Penalty Kicks in football. Both teams had to nominate bowlers and the aim was to hit the vacant stumps from 22 yards. Stunningly, Pakistan opted for their regular bowlers – and all of them missed the stumps, while for India, part-timers Virender Sehwag and Uthappa hit the stumps along with Harbhajan Singh as India blanked Pakistan 3-0 in the bowl out to claim victory in the match.

IND vs PAK T20 World Cup 2007 (Final)

India and Pakistan then went on to meet in the final of the first-ever T20 World Cup at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. In what was to be a monumental game in the T20 landscape, India were crowned the inaugural T20 World Cup winners beating Pakistan by 5 wickets in a nail-biting finish. After opting to bat, India, buoyed by Gautam Gambhir’s 54-ball 75 and Rohit Sharma’s 16-ball 30 down the order, posted 157/5. Umar Gul picked up 3/28 for Pakistan.

Pakistan were rocked early in their chase with RP Singh claiming two early wickets but Imran Nazir’s 14-ball 33 and Younis Khan’s run-a-ball 24 kept them in the hunt before Misbah ul Haq took the game down to the wire with a gritty 38-ball 43. Joginder Sharma was entrusted to bowl the final over of the match with Pakistan needing 13 runs to win with one wicket in hand. Misbah clobbered a six off the 2nd delivery of the over to bring down the equation to 6 off 4 balls. Misbah then proceeded for a ramp/scoop shot but failed to clear the short third man fielder S Sreessanth, who held on to the catch that crowned India champions.

IND vs PAK T20 World Cup 2022

A vengeful India after their last year’s defeat against Pakistan, turned the tables in 2022. Pakistan registered 159 in the Group 2 match of Super 12 at Melbourne. Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed’s fifties set the stage for Pakistan after the loss of their openers for cheap. However, Virat’s 82 off 53, assisted by Hardik’s 40 off 37 led India to secure a close contest win.
