The marquee clash between India and Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 got underway at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday after a rain delay.

In a heartwarming moment ahead of the tee-off Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and Pakistani pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi acknowledged each other with a high-five while walking out for the national anthems of the teams.

The world’s eyes were on Nassau as the ICC showpiece pitted the neighbouring nations in a highly-charged Group A encounter in the 20-over extravaganza.

The coin toss was delayed by around half an hour due to showers as the groundsmen brought out the covers.

When the rain did subdue, before eventually coming to a halt, the covers were removed and the captains were called out for the toss, which swung Pakistan’s way and skipper Babar Azam did not hesitate to put their rivals to bat first.

The first ball was pushed a bit citing a wet outfield, but when India did come out to bat with captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli the crowds raised the decibel levels.

Afridi picked up the new ball for Pakistan as Rohit took strike. The Indian skipper got off the mark in the very first delivery of the game with a double as he played one on the on-side for runs. Rohit delighted the blue faithful with a brilliant six as he played a pick-up shot to dispatch the seamer’s ball over the ropes and into the stands to send the Indian fans into a frenzy.

However, rain made yet another appearance following the conclusion of the first over and the players were forced back to the dugout with India at 8 for no loss at the end of one over in the headline fixture.

Following the stop in the showers, again, Play resumed in a bit as Pakistan roared into the resumption with the scalps of Kohli and Rohit in consecutive overs as Naseem Shah and Afridi scalped the Indian openers to curtail the cheers from the Indian seats in the stadium.
