Satisfying a sweet tooth is always a delightful pursuit, and the internet often proves to be a treasure trove of recipes to satiate those cravings. Amidst the plethora of options, there’s a particular viral video that’s been raising eyebrows: a woman crafting a cake using eggshells. Sounds bizarre, doesn’t it? Video vlogger Bethany shared this unusual recipe on Instagram, and it’s causing quite a stir.

In the video, Bethany begins by instructing viewers to add 4 whole raw eggs, 1 orange, and 8 ounces (approximately 225 grams) of chocolate spread into a blender. But here’s the kicker—she blends everything together, including the eggshells for “extra calcium” and the orange rind for added fiber. Once the unique batter is ready, she pours it into a baking mold lined with parchment paper and tops it off with slices of blood oranges. After baking at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, the “chocolate orange snack cake” is ready to be savored.

In her caption, Bethany went on to explain that eggshells are edible, citing their high calcium content. She even provided a link to a study supporting her claim.

“And yes, you can eat the eggshells (loaded with calcium!) just be sure they’re washed well like everything else of course. There was even a study in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and they found that taking eggshells (finely ground), along with vitamin D3 and magnesium, significantly strengthened their bones by improving bone mineral density. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10758743/,” she wrote.

Since being shared online, Bethany’s video has garnered over 4.7 million views, sparking a flurry of reactions in the comments section.

A user lamented, “I just love all these recipes but I’m allergic to eggs, so almost all of them are a no for me… being allergic to eggs, dairy, soy gluten makes it tough.”

In disagreement, another wrote, “Why would you make this? It’s not healthy and probably tastes like shit.” “If you serve that to me, I’ll immediately call the police,” an individual wrote jokingly.

However, there were positive responses. A person shared, “I’ve been using ground eggshells I dry in the oven and grind into powder- for years!! It’s the only thing that effectively helped me with my osteopenia and it’s totally flavorless and cheap! Eggs- Talk about nature’s multivitamin.”

“Everyone is concerned about the eggshells but I’m here thinking Artisana chocolate spread is expensive and she just threw the whole jar in there. There are more budget friendly easy to make chocolate cakes that also use healthy ingredients,” someone pointed out.
