In a candid 2006 interview with Filmfare, Rekha opened up about the reasons behind her and Amitabh Bachchan’s decision not to work together after their iconic 1981 film Silsila. The interview, which resurfaced on social media on Amitabh Bachchan’s 82nd birthday, quickly went viral.
Rekha reflected on how she felt about the long break from working with Amitabh Bachchan, admitting that it was a personal loss for her not to share in his immense growth as an actor over the years. She spoke with immense pride, stating, “My loss is that I didn’t get a chance to share the phenomenal growth of Amitji as an actor.” Despite this, Rekha expressed her happiness when producers offered her the chance to dub for actresses like Neetu Singh in Yaaraana and Sridevi in Aakhri Raasta.
When asked why she and Amitabh had not collaborated again since Silsila, Rekha offered a profound and philosophical response. She said, “The only rational answer that I can think of is that the wait to be able to co-star with Amitji is worth it. That everything happens for the right reason at the right time.” Rekha went on to explain that it wasn’t about the passage of time, but rather the judgment of directors who were yet to find a project worthy of their combined talent. “I truly believe that sabr ka phal meetha hota hai. In this case, time is not of the essence. That I know for sure,” she added.
In a touching tribute to Amitabh on his birthday, Rekha shared a heartfelt wish. She expressed hope that everyone, including herself, could experience the privilege of having a role model like Amitabh in their life. Rekha prayed for his health and serenity, acknowledging his undeniable impact on everyone who encountered him, even if he remained unaware of it. “Amitabh Bachchan is an experience. You have to feel the full blast to understand it,” she concluded, quoting a line from Silsila: “Jo baat labzon mein adaa ho jaaye woh baat hi kya…” (What can be called a true expression when it can’t be conveyed in words).
