Mango is one of those juicy fruits that most of us eagerly look forward to throughout the year. Once it arrives in the summer season, it is a delicious treat for people of all ages. However, beyond the taste, does the fruit guarantee a powerhouse of nutrients as well? In an interview with The Indian Express, Dr Sri Karan Uddesh Tanugula describes what happens to your body when you incorporate mangoes into your daily routine, particularly for breakfast. Dr Sri Karan is a Consultant General Physician at Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad. According to the doctor, the mangoes contain-
1. Vitamins and Minerals
Mango comprises many essential vitamins and minerals that are required by our body. Also, mangoes are rich in vitamin C which helps in boosting collagen production in our body, and healthy skin and strengthens the immune system. Besides that, these citrus fruits contain folate (vitamin B9) which helps in cell growth, especially during childbirth.
2. Rich In Potassium
As per the Health Experts, mangoes contain medium to high amounts of potassium. A 165-gram (g) cup of raw mango provides 277 milligrams (mg) of potassium or 5.89 per cent of an adult’s daily needs. Potassium is also an important mineral that helps regulate fluid balance in our body. The potassium ions present in blood control nerve function and muscle contraction as well. This fruit is also rich in antioxidant properties that protect cells from getting damaged.
3. Fibre for a healthy gut system
Eating ripe mangoes can decrease the problems of indigestion, bloating, and constipation. The fibre, potassium, and antioxidants found in mangoes contribute to heart health by lessening cholesterol levels. It helps in regulating blood pressure and preventing oxidative stress.
4. Anti-inflammatory properties
Mango also has anti-inflammatory properties, phytochemicals and anti-cancer properties. For those who don’t know about the phytochemicals, they are plant-based bioactive compounds produced by plants for their protection. They can be derived from various sources such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and herbs. More than a thousand phytochemicals have been discovered to date.
How much mango should be consumed?
Mango comprises a lot of sugar so it should be eaten in moderation. Also, people with diabetes should be a little cautious in eating mangoes.
