NEW DELHI: Kochi has got the dubious distinction of leading the 35 metro cities of the country with highest crime rate. The latest statistics compiled by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) show a steep increase of about 193 per cent in the crime rate in the city.Kochi is being distantly followed by Indore and Bhopal from Madhya Pradesh. The data from 35 mega cities across the country, with a population of over 10 lakh, was compiled and analysed to throw out this finding. The list includes cities like Meerut, Faridabad and Patna generally considered ‘notorious’ for their high crime rate. The startling figures came to fore in a latest report ‘Crime in India-2010’, 58th in the series, was released by Union Home Minister P Chidmabaram on Thursday.“Kochi reported the highest crime rate of 1897.8 among the mega cities in the country followed by Indore at 868.2 and Bhopal with 823,” the report raid.In comparison to this, the total urban crime rate of India stands at 341.9 and the national figure a meager 187.6.The overall crime rate at national level has also registered an increase of 3.4 percent over the previous year. But Kochi reported a “significant” increase of 193.7 percent. As against this about 20 cities in the list have shown a dip in the crime figures in comparison to the preceding year.Throwing further light on the crime scenario in the country, the report said that cases like attempt to murder, rape, kidnapping and abduction, robbery, dowry death, crime against women and children have shown an upward trend. While crime against Scheduled Castes has declined by 2.6 percent, that against Scheduled Tribes has shown an increase of 8.5 percent in 2010.
