CHENNAI: A man working as a cook in a house at Alwarpet allegedly made away with jewels and cash from his employer on Monday. He was said to have decamped with the loot after serving drinks laced with drugs to the other staff in the house.Police said that about a month ago, the suspect, Rajesh (40) from Orissa, was engaged as a cook by Nitesh Goyal at his house on St Mary’s Road.Goyal lived with his wife Deepika and three other people worked as domestic helps in their house. On Sunday, the couple left home to attend a function. When they returned Monday afternoon, they found their staff and the watchman unconscious on a bed and Rajesh missing. Growing suspicious, the couple checked their rooms and found a steel almirah open with the jewels and cash kept inside missing. But, valuables and money kept in another almirah were intact.The couple then called the police and senior officials arrived at the scene. Once they regained consciousness, the staff members told police that after dinner the previous night, Rajesh served them some cold drinks, which they drank and subsequently fell unconscious. The exact extent of the stolen goods was yet to be ascertained, said police.
