CHENNAI: A habeas corpus writ plea has been filed in the Madras High Court by Maria Deepak (22) of Perambur for a direction to the police to restore his wife Vidya Rani, daughter of slain forest brigand Veerappan, from his wife Muthulakshmi. A division bench comprising Justice C Nagappan and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, before which the petition came up on an earlier occasion, had directed the police to produce Vidya Rani in the court on Wednesday. She is likely to be produced before the bench on Wednesday. In his petition, Deepak said he was in love with Vidya Rani, while he was studying in Loyola College, for more than two years. At that time, Rani was studying in the Women’s Christian College. He married her on March 30 this year and it was registered at the Sub-Registrar’s Office in Kodambakkam on April 23.On August 25, Muthulakshmi took Rani for a function at the ‘samadhi’ of Veerappan at Macheri in Salem district, the petition said. Thereafter, Rani’s whereabouts were not known. Alleging that Muthulakshmi wanted to break their inter-caste marriage and was keeping Rani in her illegal custody, Deepak has filed the petition. When Express contacted Muthulakshmi, she refused to comment saying it was a very personal issue. “Already we have been mentally affected by this development. Please don’t blow this up as it would affect my daughter’s mind further,” she said.According to her, her daughter was back with her and “there is no need to rake up the issue again.”
