CHENNAI: A project to set up a medical college, managed and owned by doctors, was inaugurated in the city on Sunday. Headed by Dr C Anbarasu, founder and managing trustee of the Doctors’ Medical College Trust, the college is slated to have the unique distinction of being funded and managed entirely by doctors and medical educators. “Land at Odhukadu near Redhills has been identified for setting up the college and hospital,” announced Dr Anbarasu. He added that permission had been obtained from the government to build the college on 23 acres of land, donated by the AMS Trust. “Many doctors now find it difficult to get admissions for their wards in medical colleges and carry their legacy forward,” he said. President of Tamil Nadu Medical Practitioners’ Association Dr C M K Reddy backed him. “The new project will hopefully solve such problems,” Dr Reddy said, adding that many of his doctor friends have told him that they admitted their children to other courses as they were unable to get medical seats.Commending the initiative, Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology Dr G Viswanathan said emphasis should be on higher education. “India is still at a stage where higher education is more or less limited to the elite. It will take a lot of effort from both the government and private sector to set this right,” he said. He said more and more students were applying for engineering courses. “Even now, there are hardly 2,000 seats each in public and private government colleges. This should change,” he said.On the financial commitment from the medical fraternity for running the facility, Dr Meher Ali, a former Government Medical College Dean, said graduates should be asked to contribute a certain amount till the time came for the next generation from their household to enter the portals of medical education.Dr Kanagasabai, Dean, Madras Medical College, said that such ventures were the need of the hour in the State. The project is likely to become a reality in the next few years.
