Chennai building collapse: death toll climbs to 29, woman rescued succumbs to injuries
A woman rescued almost 60 hours after the tragedy, unfortunately expired in the hospital.

Chennai: Four days after an under construction building came crashing down in Chennai, the death toll has now risen to 29.

Three persons were pulled out alive. One among them, Mahesh informed the authorities, that other people are still trapped inside. "Mahesh was rescued alive today besides two others. He has indicated that several persons are alive under the rubble including his wife. This has enthused rescue personnel," K Kulandaisamy, director, public health told PTI.

Kulandaisamy also said that they were hopeful of rescuing more people. "We are very hopeful and positive. Also, there are indications about the likely location of the survivors under the rubble. We hope that survivors should be holed up in that location," he said.

Rescue operations are still in progress and 26 people have been rescued so far. 18 construction workers are still feared to be trapped inside.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has accused the builder of having violated norms, while police has arrested six people including the real estate developer for negligence.

The building was being constructed by a Madurai-based builder.

Officials have also said that the second eleven storey building under construction is unsafe and have cordoned it off.
