New Delhi: India needs another Green Revolution to dramatically boost its agricultural production, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared on Saturday.
Speaking from the Red Fort on the country's Independence Day, the Prime Minister said the time had come for farmers and scientists to go for more modern methods of farming.
"The country needs another Green Revolution," he said, referring to the revolutionary transformation in the farming sector in the 1960s that made the country self-sufficient in food requirements.
He said the government would do its best to achieve a seven percent growth in agriculture. "Delay in Monsoon will have adverse affect on some crops his year but I am hopeful that we will be able to tackle the situation. We are confident we will achieve this in the next five years."
Prime Minister also said the Food Security Act will brought to provide food to people Below Poverty Line (BPL).
Faced with increasing water shortages that is affecting millions, Manmohan Singh also coined a new slogan for the nation: Pani Bachao (Save Water).
Manmohan Singh underlined the urgent need to preserve the country's depleting water and other natural resources. He went on to say that India needed a new slogan: "Pani Bachao".
