The 1996 Volkswagen Beetle is not just popular in Germany but has also attracted a lot of attention in Mexico. The city has kept one of the most popular models of the Beetle alive, with many people driving them in Mexico City.
The Volkswagen Beetle is popularly known as ‘Vocho’ in Mexico City, and people often refer to it as ‘The Bug is King’. For a long time, Beetle were used as taxis in the city. However, people in Mexico were fascinated with its design and structure; it became a people’s car.
The 1996 Volkswagen Beetle was a fan favourite for a long time. However, the company stopped production in 2003 and introduced newer models. Eventually, its popularity started to diminish, especially in metropolises.
But there is one area in Mexico that is still extremely fond of the bug. The area is situated in the northern neighbourhood of Cuautepec, where The Beetle are still in line and can be easily spotted on the roads.
The area has become so popular for Volkswagen Beetles that it is being nicknamed ‘Vocholandia’. As reported by AP News, a cab driver revealed that Volkswagen Beetles are used as taxis because the cars are inexpensive and the engine located in the back of the vehicle gives it more power to climb the neighbourhood’s steep hills.
In a conversation with AP News, taxi driver Navarro said, “While some of the older cars wobble along, paint long faded after years of wear and tear, other drivers dress their cars up, keeping them in top shape.” The mechanics in the area revealed that even though the tradition of driving an old Beetle is dying, there are certain shops that still keep its maintenance parts.
In terms of specs and features of the Volkswagen Beetle (1945–2003), the car produces a power of 24 bhp at 3300 RPM. The car runs on a 4-speed manual gearbox and is rear-wheel-drive.
