In today’s fast-paced world, individuals are pushing themselves harder than ever to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact, regardless of their background or circumstances. This determination is evident not only in bustling cities but also in remote villages, where people are striving to overcome obstacles and create meaningful change.

In an inspiring story, Arti, an 18-year-old e-rickshaw driver from a small village in Uttar Pradesh, received the prestigious Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award in London earlier this week, followed by a meeting with King Charles III.

For the reception at Buckingham Palace, Arti arrived in a pink rickshaw, showing it as an eco-friendly way to travel and a symbol of a larger movement.

Arti was honoured at the Prince’s Trust Awards, an event that celebrates the achievements of young people from around the world. The award recognises “the global work of young women who have succeeded against the odds and made a lasting difference to those around them,” according to the official website.

After the award ceremony on May 22, Arti had the opportunity to meet King Charles in Buckingham Palace. The 18-year-old described the meeting as an “amazing experience” and said in Hindi that the King was “so nice and sent his namaste to my family back home too,” as per a report in WION.

She also revealed that he paid attention to her speaking about her love for driving her e-rickshaw, which, she claimed, “does not run on polluting diesel or petrol but one that I charge at home every night.”

Arti, who has a 5-year-old daughter, told PTI that she wants to “inspire other girls who face similar challenges,” adding that her newfound independence has “allowed me to see the world in a different light.”

“Now, I am able to fulfil not only my dreams but also those of my daughter,” she said.

The Prince’s Trust International (now King’s Trust International) was founded by King Charles when he was the Prince of Wales. This trust supports young people across 20 countries through employment, education and enterprise programmes. The Prince’s Trust Women’s Empowerment Award celebrates young women around the world who have overcome challenges and made a significant impact in their communities.

Arti was introduced to the Indian government’s pink e-rickshaw scheme by Project Lehar (in partnership with Prince’s Trust International and the Aga Khan Foundation) in July last year. This initiative aims to increase employment opportunities for women, especially widows and single mothers, while also improving their access to safe transport.
