In the Bollywood industry, it’s common for 2 or 3 films to be released on the same day, although filmmakers usually try to avoid this as it significantly affects box office performance. In 2005, a rare box office clash occurred between two films directed by the same filmmaker, Priyadarshan. The films in question were Kyon Ki and Garam Masala.
Priyadarshan, known for delivering numerous hit films in both Malayalam and Hindi cinema, saw two of his films Garam Masala and Kyonki released back-to-back in 2005. However, this resulted in a major financial loss for one of the films.
Garam Masala, a comedy-drama starring Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, was released on November 2, 2005. It was a Hindi remake of the 1985 Malayalam film Boeing Boeing and featured a supporting cast that included Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Rimi Sen, and Neetu Chandra. Made on a budget of Rs 17 crore, the film performed well at the box office, earning Rs 54.65 crore globally and becoming a hit.
Just a day later, on November 3, 2005, Kyon Ki starring Salman Khan and directed by Priyadarshan, was released. The film featured Kareena Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, and Rimi Sen in key roles. Unfortunately, Kyonki was not well-received by audiences, who were disappointed with the storyline.
As a result, the film, a Hindi remake of the 1986 Malayalam hit Thalavattam, performed poorly. Despite being released during Diwali, Kyon Ki on a budget of Rs 21 crore, managed to earn only Rs 23 crore globally, making it a box-office flop. After this failure, Salman Khan did not work with Priyadarshan again.
Priyadarshan started his career in Malayalam cinema in the early 1980s and was active in the 1980s and 1990s. He moved to Bollywood (Hindi film) in the 2000s and was very prolific in that decade. He has won the National Award three times during his career. In 2013, he announced that Rangrezz would be his last Hindi film for the time being as he would be concentrating on Malayalam cinema.
