When we think of Indian weddings, the first thought that comes to mind is the groom arriving on a horse or a car followed by a large procession. A unique wedding was witnessed by the people of Jalore in Rajasthan recently. The groom here arrived not on a horse as expected, but on a camel. The wedding guests aka baraati arrived on camel carts. The locals were in for a surprise. In Jalore’s Bhawatra village, when the wedding procession and the groom arrived on camel carts, people from nearby areas thronged to see this visual. The groom’s wedding procession became the buzz of the town. In an interview with Local18, Wagata Ram Dewasi shared that the bride’s family was expecting the groom to arrive in a grand car and the wedding guests, aka, baraati would arrive in special cars for the wedding. After all, it is the current trend in almost all big cities. They were in for a huge shock and surprise, when they saw that the groom arrived on a camel cart.

The groom named Vikram, belonging to the Dewasi community, decided on a traditional approach to the wedding by arriving on a camel cart. This way, they kept the customs and their culture alive. Suraj Dewasi, uncle of the groom told Local18 that Vikram Dewasi, son of Wagata Ram Dewasi, a resident of Bhawatra is tying the knot to Choparam, the daughter of Paras Dewasi, a resident of Valera.

The wedding procession arrived at the venue in the evening with utmost pomp as the camels were decorated and so were the camel carts, just as per old traditions. About 40 to 50 camels were a part of the wedding procession, which pulled the cart and reached Valera late in the evening.

Previously, in Kannur, Kerala, traffic came to a halt which led to congestion after a groom reached the bride’s house mounted on a camel in Varam. This attracted a large number of onlookers and resulted in traffic congestion on the road leading to Kannur International Airport. It was with the intervention of the Police who charged the onlookers with lathis to restore traffic movement.
