Both the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max May Feature 'Tetraprism' Zooming: Report
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max may feature a "tetraprism" telephoto zoom lens, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro models are still several months away, with a potential release date slated for September of next year. However, as we approach 2024, the rumor mill surrounding the new models is beginning to pick up speed.

The most recent update on the Apple iPhone 16 Pro models comes from MacRumors. The publication states that its sources have indicated that both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a “tetraprism" telephoto zoom lens, which was introduced earlier this year exclusively with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This will be a notable divergence from the iPhone 15 Pro models, as the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro only features a 3x (72mm equivalent) lens rather than a 5x lens. If this report is accurate, both 16 Pro models will have comparable camera performance. MacRumors’ information also corresponds to the claims made by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in September.

Larger iPhones Could Be Coming

The report further added that in order to achieve this, Apple may have to increase the size of the standard iPhone 16 Pro model from a 6.1-inch to a 6.3-inch OLED panel. Therefore, we may see the smaller Pro model getting larger in order to improve optics. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, too, may offer a larger display coming in at a massive 6.9-inches. But, remember, these are just rumors for now, and should be taken with a grain of salt until the products finally become official.

It is worth noting, however, that the preference for a 5X or 3X lens is subjective, and there is a clear divide in online communities regarding which is superior. Some users argue that the 3X telephoto is more useful for real-world scenarios, as a 5X lens can sometimes feel too “tight." However, the 120mm equivalent 5X telephoto lens can produce beautiful portraits and allow for a more compressed image background.
