Lucknow: Asserting that the BSP can never be an alternative to the SP, the BJP said on Friday that the electorate of Uttar Pradesh have rightly rejected the ''reign of crime and terror'' of the Samajwadi Party but adopted the regime of ''corruption and arrogance''.
Admitting that the worst-ever drubbing of the party at the hustings, BJP Party national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the results had disappointed the party.
Naqvi said it was a clear mandate against the misrule of Mulayam Singh Yadav but if the choice of BSP as an alternative was good, remained to be seen.
"The SP regime may be anti-people but the state has earlier witnessed the corrupt and arrogant rule of BSP as well,'' he said.
He said it was the first time that BSP had achieved a majority on its own, adding that it had a bigger task ahead to cater to all segments of society.
Promising to play the role of a responsible opposition in the state, the senior BJP leader said his party was down but not out.
''I urge all my partymen not to be demoralised and look forward to bigger challenges ahead.''
Naqvi, who was camping in Lucknow on the result day, said the party had postponed its legislature party meeting scheduled for Saturday to another date to be announced later.
