New Delhi: The next General Elections in India will be held with redrawn constituencies for President Pratibha Patil has signed the order making Delimitation a law.
The President's assent to the delimitation proposal came amid indications from the Law Ministry that it would come into immediate effect in almost all parts of the country — except Meghalaya and Tripura where the Assembly poll process is already on and there it would come into force from March 20.
Also excluded are four north-eastern states — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland — and Jharkhand where there are some problems in the delimitation exercise.
The political map of the country would undergo a drastic change with the proposal to redraw Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies.
The notifications altering constituencies in 24 states and union territories under the delimitation process raises questions over early assembly polls in Karnataka.
Elections are to be held in the state before May 28 when President's Rule ends, but under Delimitation, the Election Commission would need six months to hold elections, indicating that the polls could be held by August this year.
In Karnataka, delimitation would mean 16 more seats would be reserved for the Backwards, which the Congress feels would help them...
