Kolkata: Terming the Maoists as being out of sync with time, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday said the rebels' boycott call has not affected polling in the West Bengal assembly elections. "There is no indication that the Maoists' call for poll boycott has affected the desire of the people of Bengal to vote in large numbers. The polling percentage was around 85 percent in first two phases," said Chidambaram.
He said the Maoists reject democracy as their philosophy was limited to "arms and aberration of struggle". "But the people of the country are in favour of democracy and democratic elections. This tells us that the Maoists' philosophies or Naxal philosophies are completely out of sync with what the people want, which is democracy, and the democratic desire of the people of India," the home minister told reporters here.
He said with two phases of the elections already over, the Left extremists' boycott call would have no bearing on the coming phases.
On the allegation by the communists that the Trinamool and the Maoist party are hand in glove, he said: "We have rejected the allegation earlier and they have not given any evidence in support of their allegation."
On whether the Central Para-military Forces (CPMF) will be deployed in Maoist affected areas if a new government led by the Congress-Trinamool is formed, Chidambaram said: "It is for the new government to tell us whether they want the forces and how much they want and for how long. When they say that, we will examine it on merit and do the needful."
