BJP slams Karuna for challenging EC's autonomy
BJP said the EC should even consider derecognition of the ruling party in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Slamming Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi for "challenging" the autonomy of the Election Commission, BJP on Sunday said the EC should even consider derecognition of the ruling party.

"The EC has to proceed with a kind of corrective action against Karunanidhi. He is challenging the autonomy of the EC," BJP All India Secretary Muralidhar Rao told reporters.

Asked what corrective action he expected, he said, "The EC should proceed with even derecognition. The way the DMK is doing (criticising the commission), it is required," he added.

He also flayed the Congress, DMK's ally, saying it was "keeping quiet and endorsing Karunanidhi in his attack against EC."

Karunanidhi had of late has been mounting scathing attacks on the Election Commission, saying some of its officers were behaving like in "Emergency" times and troubling the innocent in the name of vehicle checks to curb money power.

Addressing election meetings on Saturday, he had said the Centre should consider in future while constituting the Election Commission what are all the powers it should have besides posting officials who were "fair, upright and impartial."

Earlier, he had come down hard on the Commission for ordering transfer of top police officers including DGP Letika Saran and ADGP (Intelligence) MS Jaffer Sait, saying "honest" officers had been shifted based on AIADMK's complaints.

Urging the electors to trounce the DMK-led alliance, Rao said only this will allow the CBI zero in on the "fountain heads of corruption," in 2G spectrum scam, both in DMK and Congress.

"The people of Tamil Nadu know (former Telecom Minister) A Raja is not alone. If the DMK is voted back to power they may want to restrict prosecution to Raja alone," he said.

Expressing apprehensions of large-scale cash distribution in the next 48 hours, Rao requested the EC to tighten up monitoring, including covering booth levels.

He said Karunanidhi was "counting his days as Chief Minister."
