In a recent interview, Sandeep Reddy Vanga discussed the film's dramatic action scenes, citing Kill Bill by famed director Quentin Tarantino as an inspiration.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga is currently enjoying the success of his latest film Animal. While the film has been criticised for promoting toxic masculinity and violence, it has performed well at the box office. The film has been appreciated by critics for its never-before-seen action sequence and intense portrayal by both the lead and the antagonist. In a recent interview, the filmmaker discussed the film’s dramatic action scenes, citing Kill Bill by famed director Quentin Tarantino as an inspiration.

In the interview with Galatta Plus, Sandeep Reddy Vanga revealed that a specific combat scene in Animal was inspired by Kill Bill by Quentin Tarantino. He stated, “The inspiration is from Kill Bill. In Kill Bill there is a fight sequence that is never ending. I was hooked on it. I saw it multiple times and saw it holding my attention. First, when I saw that scene in Kill Bill, I thought it was so smartly done. That remained in me. When I read in the reviews that Kill Bill style action was used in Animal, then I realized it.”

Moreover, critics have time and again pointed out the fascination of Sandeep Reddy Vanga with flawed male leads on screen, and the director stated that since childhood he has mostly liked films that showed such characters. He narrated, “When I went to film school, I was exposed to flawed men watching the movies of David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, and Stanley Kubrick. So, I felt like this is a zone in which I can tell stories.”

Moreover, speaking about making the antagonist a Muslim, the director said that he has seen many people convert to Christianity and Islam but never seen “anybody converting to Hinduism” when they face a bad phase in their lives. Therefore, in order to highlight the traumatic backstory of the villain he made him a Muslim. “I thought I’ll use this, because you can get multiple wives in Islam. I can have multiple cousins with different faces; the drama will be bigger. That’s the only reason. There was no intention to show a Muslim in a bad light,” he added.

Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, and Anil Kapoor, portrays a complex story highlighted by violence and disagreements, which stem mostly from a difficult relationship between a father and son. The film has earned about Rs 528.69 crore since its release on December 1.
