Hiroyuki Sanada Opens Up About Acting and Producing Shogun: 'It Is a Grand Human Drama'
Shogun is set to release on February 28. Ahead of the series' release, Hiroyuki Sanada talks about bringing the show to life.

Immerse yourself in an epic drama set in feudal Japan with FX’s Shōgun. An original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel by the same name, the 10-episode limited series unravels in 17th-century Japan when a mysterious ship appears in a nearby village, leading to a civil war and unleashes a fight for survival for Lord Yoshii Toranaga as his enemies unite against him. Created for television by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the all-new series features an acclaimed Japanese cast that includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis in pivotal roles.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who has been seen in international projects such as Mortal Kombat, Army of the Dead, Bullet Train and John Wick: Chapter 4, is not only playing the pivotal part of Yoshii Toranaga in the series but also assumes the role of the producer. Speaking about the challenges of bringing Yoshii Toranaga to life, Hiroyuki Sanada said, “I think it is a grand human drama; being part of this project as an actor and producer is incredibly meaningful to me. I feel we took an important step forward. Yoshii Toranaga was a feudal lord in the Kanto region, there are many trials awaiting him, including ones within his family, he waits for his moment, for the right moment to strike. It is a season full of trials and tribulations, to say the least.”
