ilip Kumar was one of the greatest acting stalwarts in Bollywood. He impressed everyone with his impeccable acting skills. In an illustrious career spanning more than 5 decades, Dilip Kumar acted in many hit films including Shakti and Devdas. He went on to win the Filmfare Award under the Best Actor category for the 1982-released Shakti, directed by Ramesh Sippy. Amitabh Bachchan was also nominated under this category for the Filmfare Award. He failed to win this prestigious prize. Shakti turned out to be the first and the last film for both Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. Despite the inclusion of a stellar star cast and writer duo Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, this film failed to evoke a great response from the audience. This was quite surprising because Ramesh Sippy had earlier directed Sholay with Big B and the hit writer team.
Ramesh Sippy talked about the reason behind this failure in an interview last year. He said, “By the time Shakti was released, Bachchan sahab became an institution. He would do everything in the film — from dancing, singing, fighting to romancing. So, it was a one-man performance. When Shakti came, it felt like people were disappointed. The frontbencher audience didn’t get that satisfaction. But a film’s story has some limitations.”
Shakti starred an ensemble star cast of Rakhee Gulzar, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Amrish Puri and others.
Ramesh Sippy had lavished praise on Big B in another media conversation. Ramesh Sippy said that Amitabh Bachchan can’t be described by a single film. According to the veteran director, Big B has done so much good work in his young days. He added that when the actor grew older, he acted in Mohabbatein and many other films. Ramesh Sippy said that the Don actor keeps surprising you with different characters and roles and you don’t want to take your eyes off him.
Amitabh Bachchan will next play the role of Ashwatthama, in the film Kalki 2898 AD.
