From Child Actress To Carving A Niche In Bollywood, A Look At Tabu’s Journey

Tabu is one of those actresses who is still relevant in the film industry after four decades of her debut in Bollywood. She has shared screens with almost every superstar of Hindi films including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn. The actress’ pairing with Ajay Devgn is loved the most. The duo starred together in 10 films till now. Tabu started working in films at a very young age, but she got her first breakthrough with Ajay Devgn-starrer Vijaypath in 1994. Let us take a look at Tabu’s roller-coaster journey in Bollywood and how she became one of the most loved actresses in Indian cinema.

Tabu’s real name is Tabassum Fatima Hashmi. She was born in a Muslim family in Hyderabad. Her father Jamal Ali Hashmi was a Pakistani actor, who returned to India to live with Tabu’s mother Rizwana. When Tabu was just three years old, her father left the family.

The actress worked in the film Bazaar at the age of 11. It was her uncredited appearance in the song Chale Aao Saiyan.

She got her first credited role with Dev Anand’s Hum Naujawan. She was only 14 years old at that time. The film was released in 1985. After this, she tried to make her name in the Telugu film industry with the film Coolie No 1. It starred Venkatesh and Tabu in lead roles. After a hiatus of nine years from Bollywood, the actress grabbed her first lead role in the film Pehla Pehla Pyar in 1994. It was the same year when she got her first big hit in the form of Ajay Devgn’s Vijaypath. It was the start of Tabu’s much-loved pairing with Ajay Devgn and her glorious career. She made many hit and blockbuster films with Ajay Devgn including Drishyam, Haqiqat, Golmaal Again and De De Pyar De.

Her onscreen pairing with Ajay Devgn was not the only reason for her success though. The year 1996 was key for Tabu. Her performance as a young woman affected by the Punjab insurgency in Gulzar’s Maachis proved to be a breakthrough, winning her the National Film Award for Best Actress. That year, Tabu won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for the romance Ninne Pelladata, and featured alongside Govinda in the comedy film Saajan Chale Sasural.

Many of Tabu’s films like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Andhadhun became blockbusters. She established herself as a star in the Bollywood industry. Talking about love life, Tabu’s name has been associated with South superstar Nagarjuna. But both of them never accepted their relationship. She shares a good bond with Ajay Devgn.

Tabu’s recent women-centric film Crew was a hit at the box office this year. She starred in the lead role with Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. She was last seen in Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha with Ajay Devgn. It was a commercial failure at the box office.
