Despite the showers, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi today, Thursday, just a day after the city saw India’s highest temperature hit 52.9 degrees Celsius at the Mungeshpur weather station.
However, some respite is on the horizon for tomorrow, with the weather department predicting partly cloudy skies, light rain, and gusty winds (25-35 kmph).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that severe heatwave conditions will continue in many parts of the country until June 1. The IMD stated that the extreme heat will gradually ease over Northwest and Central India in the next 2-3 days. “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will persist in most places in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, many places in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and isolated areas in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh,” the department reported.

Isolated pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha will likely experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions on the 29th and 30th, with isolated heatwave conditions on May 31 and June 1.
Additionally, the IMD noted, “Warm night conditions at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorm/lightning in isolated places in Uttarakhand accompanied by gusty winds (speed 40-50 KMPH).”
