Why Priyanka Chopra's 'Mary Kom' is no 'Barfi!'; but still is an earnest performance
Priyanka's performance in the film, though, is often marred by a weak script and unnecessary melodrama.

There are spoilers ahead.

Priyanka Chopra does not look like MC Mary Kom. The prosthetic, the bad, broken Hindi and same hairdo don't help either. A fact that Chopra herself admits but is quick to add that she only tries to represent the boxer's spirit in the biopic. And the actress does manage to portray the world champion to a considerable amount.

Debutant director Omang Kumar's biopic on the living legend Mary Kom may have several loopholes in the script and screenplay, but Priyanka Chopra manages to give an earnest performance as the famous boxer. Her performance in the film, though, is often marred by a weak script and unnecessary melodrama.

In a deglamorous role, Priyanka makes the character her own. Well aware of the fact that criticisms will come her way due to the physical difference between her and the boxer and perhaps, that's why, Priyanka attempts to put in the extra effort for the role.

From undergoing vigorous training to looking convincing as a boxer to playing the doting mother of twins who is torn between her duties at home and her passion - Priyanka slips in with ease.

Every actor has that one role which is career defining. Priyanka's 'Mary Kom' act is unfortunately not that one. Because even though she is good in the film, she is not stunning like she was in Anurag Basu's 2012 film 'Barfi!' which had made people sit up and take note of her as an actress for the first time.

Sure, she delivers, but her scope is limited in the canvas provided by Omang Kumar who tends to get trapped in stereotypes.

I took away a lot more from Priyanka's performance in 'Barfi!'- It lasted a longer time with me.

What's your reaction?
