BANGALORE: “A good library is a place, a palace where the lofty sprits of all nations and generations meet,” said well-known writer Samuel Niger. A good library needs a good atmosphere and a room full of books. Although Bangalore libraries are full of books, some of them lack the much needed amiable atmosphere. Chamarajpet library is a one such example. It is situated near the Chamarajpet police station. Visitors to this library are not happy with the maintenance. There are about 150 to 200 people visiting the library on a daily basis and nearly 100 books are issued everyday. The library is housing over 5000 books. “The infrastructure of the library is very good and there are ample seating arrangements. However, the books are not updated regularly,” says Soumya, a 21-year-old student. Another regular visitor, Gajendra, a doctor says, “ Since the library is close to the main road, it creates a lot of disruptive noise which results in lack of concentration.” Another problem faced by the readers is that there are not enough books in English and other languages. About 70 per cent of the books are in Kannada (like most libraries) and the rest is devoted to English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. The sanitary facilities in the library is also appalling. “Since I spend 3-4 hours in the library, there is a need for a clean restroom. The condition of the present restroom in the library is pathetic and there are no separate toilets for gents and ladies which is a big problem,” says Akshatha a 23-year-old homemaker.Library in charge Puttanaiah said, “Lack of staff is a major issue here. I have the responsibility to maintain one more library in Kempegowdanagar. So it is difficult for me to act on visitor’s grievances. However, I will make sure that these problems are solved soon and ensure that the readers are comfortable.” The deputy director Venkatesh was unavailable for any comments.
