RANNI: Group of Engineering students of the Perunadu Caarmel Engineering College has invented a new method to reduce the fuel consumption when an air-conditioner of an automobile is turned on. They designed a turbocharger that operates on engine emissions. The exhaust is connected to the turbine of the turbo-charger and the emissions act as a propellant and cause the turbine to rotate, thus powering the compressor of the air-conditioner. “Since the air-conditioning system draws its power directly from the engine, it consumes more fuel, which in turn reduces the mileage,” they said. “This is more cost-efficient, and does not produce any pollution compared to the conventional air-conditioning system as we do not use any harmful refrigerants,” the students said. The project was done by the students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Amal Vino, Anoop Varghese, Dhanil U P, Geemon Tom, Sony Varughese and Syam Krishnan.
