CHENNAI: A recent Digestive Endoscopy Workshop has changed 30-year-old Thendral’s life. Since February 2005, when Thendral, from Pudukottai district accidentally consumed acid, she had been unable to swallow anything. She finally found a solution at the workshop held here between December 10 and 11.During the workshop she received free surgery and since then has been able to eat like before. Dr TS Chandrasekar, chairman of Medindia Hospitals, implanted a small Conio stent in her food pipe to widen it enabling food to pass through. “It’s the first time that such a low-profile, narrow stent measuring 10 cm in length, and 8-10 mm in diametre is being used in India,” Dr Chandrasekar said. “These stents cost between Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000, but with the increased use of Korean stents, prices have come down to the range of Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000,” he said. “These self-expanding metal stents can be used for a wide range of health problems, even for those with lung and heart ailments and aged people,” he said. The doctor quoted a report of the Indian Council of Medical Research, which stated that 50 per cent of cancer in men and 25 per cent of cancer in women are of that of digestive system. They can be cured with early detection, he assured, asking people to visit doctors..
