KOCHI: The aviation industry is a fast-growing sector with both public and private players creating a good number of opportunities. As a result the scope for aircraft maintenance engineers is also high. Aircraft maintenance professionals perform a set of duties entirely different from pilots and aeronautical engineers, but make an indispensable part of the industry. They will be in charge of the repair and maintenance work keeping the aircraft in perfect condition. “The aviation sector is booming with many companies coming up. An aircraft maintenance engineer is one who gives a clearance certificate stating that there is no defect and the flight is fit to fly before taking off. This service is something the industry can’t do away with,” says Titto Paul, Sha-Shib Aviation Academy. The aircraft maintenance engineering programme is a three-year training programme. A license is issued at the completion by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Eligibility for AME course is Plus Two with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Those with a three-year diploma course in any branch of engineering or a BSc degree can also apply. During the course students will be trained in safety measures, aircraft rules and regulations, general engineering and maintenance. The curriculum includes aerodynamics or theory of flight, metallurgy, electronics, handling of sophisticated equipment and practical work in machine rooms and on aircraft engines. The major institutes that offers this course include Indian Institute of Aeronautics, New Delhi, Nehru College of Aeronautics and Applied Sciences, Kuniamuthur, Coimbatore, Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy, Secunderabad, Bharat Institute of Aeronautics, Bihar, Fly Tech Aviation Academy, Maredpally West, Hyderabad, Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology, Chennai, Institute of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Secunderabad, Hindustan Institute of Aeronautics, Bhopal, Andhra Pradesh Aviation Academy, Hyderabad, Hyderabad College of Aviation Technology, Hyderabad, Sigma Aviation Academy, Secunderabad, VSM Aerospace, Bangalore, Hindustan Aviation Academy, Bangalore, Coimbatore Aeronautical College, Vinayaka Mission Aviation Academy, Salem, Southern College of Engineering and Technology, Chalakudy, Sha-Shib Aviation Academy, Kochi and Regional Institute of Aviation, Thiruvananthapuram. After gaining four or five years’ experience, you will get Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh,” adds Titto.
