BANGALORE: Starting August, Spic Macay Bengaluru Chapter will host Virasat 2011. Virasat, meaning ‘heritage’ in Hindi is a cultural festival comprising all aspects of Indian cultural heritage, and is held at various educational institutions across India. Launched for the first time in 1995, Virasat invites all classical music and dance maestros, and master craftsmen to perform at the festival, to enhance student interaction between with artistes and craftsmen, and during the first half of the academic year.Virasat 2011 will be inaugurated by the acclaimed Violin maestro Padma Bhushan Dr L Subramanium on August 10 from 6.30 to 8.30 pm at NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences).He will be accompanied by Ambi Subramanium on violin, V V Ramanamurthy (mridangam), U N Giridhar Udupa (ghatam), Sathish Pathakota (kanjira) and Satyasai Ghantasala (morsing).Renowned writer and critic Padma Bhushan professor U R Ananthamurthy will inaugurate the series and S T Ramesh, Karnataka DG and IG Police will be the guest of honour.Spic Macay Bengaluru’s Virasat 2011 is dedicated to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Asad Ali Khan and Ustad Fahimuddin Dagar. It will witness a lineup of some of the biggest artistes in the Indian music and dance fraternity.The artistes scheduled to perform over the next four months include Vidwan T V Shankaranarayanan (Carnatic vocal), Manjunath and Nagaraj (Carnatic violin), Keremane Shivananda Hegde (Yakshagana), Madan Gopal Singh (Sufi), Margi Madhu (Koodiyattam), Ustad Bahauddin Dagar (Rudra Veena), Guru Ghanakanta Bora and troupe (Sattriya dance).Virasat 2011 will witness a lineup of some of the biggest artistes in the Indian music and dance fraternity.The artistes scheduled to perform over the next four months include Vidwan T V Shankaranarayanan (Carnatic vocal), Manjunath and Nagaraj (Carnatic Violin), Keremane Shivananda Hegde (Yakshagana), Madan Gopal Singh (Sufi), Shri Margi Madhu (Koodiyattam), Ustad Bahauddin Dagar (Rudra Veena), guru Ghanakanta Bora and troupe (Sattriya dance).Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth, (Spic Macay, is a nationwide voluntary and non-profit movement. It was started in 1977, by Padma Shri Dr Kiran Seth, an IIT professor.After its first concert in 1978 at IIT Delhi, it has now moved to thousands of educational institutions spread over 250 towns in India and 50 towns overseas reaching out to over a million youth.Spic Macay Bangalore has been an active chapter of Spic Macay. It has a legacy of over two decades.Over the years, the chapter has witnessed performances of eminent personalities such as Late D K Pattamal, Birju Maharaj, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Alarmel Valli and the Purulia Chau troupe to name a few. In 2011, the chapter has been very active and conducted over 114 concerts all over the city of Bangalore and surrounding cities.
