KOCHI: Asia’s largest organiser of olympiad exams, Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), awarded the state winners of its Olympiad 2011 here on Sunday.During the award ceremony, which was inaugurated by Justice C N Ramachandran Nair at Rama Varma Club Centenary Hall, over hundred students, 20 teachers and nine principals from various schools across the state received awards. The awards were given for various categories, including Science Olympiad, Cyber Olympiad , Mathematics Olympiad and English Olympiad. The national SOF Olympiad exams were conducted in 950 cities, covering around 20 lakh students from 14,000 schools across the country. In Kerala, over 200 schools had participated in the olympiad.The SOF, which organised a state-level award ceremony in Kerala for the first time, gives away prizes worth Rs 4 crore annually.During the ceremony, executive director of SOF India, Mahabir Singh, announced a Girl Child Scholarship programme for “academically-inclined-but-financially-weaker girls in Indian families.” Under the programme, 75 girls will be given education scholarship amounting to Rs 18,000 each for their education for a year. The nominations for these scholarships will be accepted from schools and the selected children will be granted scholarship.
