RIP Sai Baba: Celebrities tweet their condolences

New Delhi: From singer Ricky Martin to actor Anupam Kher, celebrities offered their condolences on Twitter on the death of Hindu spiritual guru Sathya Sai at his home town of Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.

Martin tweeted "OM SAI BABA OM RIP" after news got out that the man, whom many followers considered as God, has passed away.

Actor Anupam Kher said on Twitter "Sathya Sai Baba had milions of followers all over the world. Their faith in him held them together. May God give them strength. RIP Baba." His colleague Riteish Deshmukh said "His invaluable guidance will be cherished for a life time. We love you n miss you BABA."

Former MTV VJ and actress Sophie Choudry said she wasn’t a follower of Sathya Sai but “it always amazed me how many lives he touched! An incredible phenomenon that even cynics cdnt ignore.RIP Satya Sai Baba.”

One of India's most famous spiritual leaders, who counted a worldwide following of millions including top diplomats, sports icons and film stars, led a life dedicated to philanthropy marred by the occasional controversies.

Sathya Sai, or Sathya Sai Baba, as he was fondly known among followers, passed away at the intensive care unit of a hospital funded by his organisation in the small town of Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh where thousands of devotees gathered to pay their last respects. He was 85.

The great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi tweeted: "One may dismiss the miracles he performed as fraud but one cannot deny the good work he did amongst the needy RIP Satya Sai Baba."
