CHENNAI: Curious neighbours watched as a 28-year-old woman staged a dharna in front of her in-laws’ house at Ekkaduthangal on Saturday, demanding that they let her live with her husband. Along with her five-year-old son, Tanish, Rajalakshmi (28) of Vadapalani staged the protest in front of her in-laws’ house at Ambal Nagar. Rajalakshmi claimed that a month after their wedding in 2006, her husband, Saravanan went away to work at Singapore. She then went back to her parents’ house in Vadapalani for a post-wedding ceremony, reportedly against the wishes of her in-laws. “I was pregnant then. Ever since, they have not been allowing me to be in their house. I don’t know what work my husband does, nor do I have his number,” she said. The woman claimed that she has not lived with her husband for the past six years, nor was she in touch with him. However, now, she has received divorce papers, she claimed. She also said that despite compromises through elders in her community and counselling by police, she was not allowed to live with her husband. Rajalakshmi said she has been living on the money earned by her father, Subramani, an autorickshaw driver, and her younger brother Rajamanickam, a salesman. “I had been coming to my in-laws for the past six years, asking for my husband’s contact number. I still haven’t got it and now they have sent me divorce papers. I know that my husband has come down from Singapore for his younger brother’s wedding,” she said. Meanwhile, Saravanan’s father claimed that his son and Rajalakshmi were not in good terms right from the beginning. “Now, she’s trying to stop my second son’s wedding,” he said.
