MADURAI: At least 15 postgraduate (PG) courses in Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) have failed to draw students for the last few years, with only 25 to 50 per cent of the total seats filled. The university offers 34 PG courses in science, humanities and commerce streams. Of this, according to MKU sources, the enrolment of students has been poor in 15 departments. Some departments have registered zero per cent intake.Though the sanctioned intake for most PG courses is 20, so far no student has enroled for M A in Religion and Philosophy and M A Comparative Dravidian Literature. Programmes such as M A in Malayalam, Folk Performing Arts, Linguistics, Sanskrit and Kannada have only single-digit student strength.“We received only five applications for MSc in Communication and Journalism this year. Of this, only two applicants are joining. Last year, there were just four outgoing students. The response has been poor for the last 20 years,” said Balasubramaniam, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Science Communication.“Earlier, students took up courses for the love of the subject. But now, they study job-oriented ones. Conventional courses are only popular among rural students as they are inexpensive,” said R Jayaraman, Special Officer, MKU. He admitted that the faculties had failed to update course syllabi, which contributed to the trend.
