The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) on Thursday submitted before the Kerala High Court that the analysis report of canal water near the sewage treatment plant (STP) do not reveal contamination due to the process of the Kitex textile unit.
“The samples collected from the outlet of the STP were examined and as per the report the treated effluent from STP confirms to the standards specified by the board,” PCB chairman K Sajeevan said.
PCB made the submission on a petition filed by Abdul Rehman and others challenging the functioning of the Kitex textile unit at Kizhakkambalam in Ernakulam district.
Following the court order the PCB had conducted a hearing regarding the allegations. The petitioners, representatives of the company and Kizhakkambalam panchayat secretary attended the hearing. It had discussed the report of the chief environmental engineer of the board after conducting inspection in the company premises.
The report said that on an average 12 tonnes of fabric was processed in the plant daily, but it has a capacity of 20 tonnes a day. Based on the water balance the treatment plant is adequate to treat the effluent generated from the unit. The PCB said that it had asked the company to furnish its opinion regarding the observations and the recommendations in the report. Meanwhile, Kitex managing director Sabu M Jacob submitted that the false information given by the ill-motivated persons was with an intention to send a report against the company, by the RDO and the officers of the PCB.
The entire treated effluent of the industry from the plant has been utilised for irrigation purpose.
He further submitted that if the functioning of the factory was obstructed on any reason, life of more than 8,000 employees in the company and their family would be in peril.
