Anna Hazare wrote a letter to Manmohan Singh on the Lokpal Bill issue.

New Delhi: Anna Hazare has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to appoint a non-political person as the chairman of the proposed 50:50 Committee to draft a new and stricter anti-corruption bill.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the veteran social activist and Gandhian, who has launched a fast-unto-death at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, said that he not interested in holding any position in the proposed committee.

"Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kejriwal met Kapil Sibal twice. Following issues were discussed. (1) Government agreed to setup a joint drafting committee consisting of 50 per cent members from civil society. (2) Government agreed that this committee should prepare its draft law by such time so that it could be presented in the monsoon session of Parliament. (3) Government had proposed Mr Pranab Mukherjee to head this committee. I request you to reconsider as these people are demanding a non-political person. (4) Despite an outcry for me to become the chairperson, I am not interested in holding any position. (5) I propose the name/s of Justice J S Verma or Justice Santosh Hegde to be made the Chairperson," he wrote in the letter.

"All the above issues should be discussed in the form of a notification or a government order, which justifies the constitution of the committee, names of its members and chairperson and time and term," he said in the letter.

Hazare's fast-unto-death against corruption entered the fourth day on Friday and his agitation has spread like wildfire across the country. Thousands of people from all walks of life have gathered at Jantar Mantar to show their support for Hazare. Social activists and people in 400 cities all across India and foreign countries have also come out.

There have been massive protests in several other cities too including Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Patna, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Ranchi, Pune, Nashik, Guwahati, Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Jammu and Srinagar.
