THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday criticised the PSC decision not to extend the term of various rank lists up to April 30, 2012 as one borne out of political motives and hence, ‘’totally wrong.’’ The PSC on Tuesday decided to reject the request of the State Government in this regard for a second time, sidelining the favourable stance taken by its chairman K S Radhakrishnan, which, in turn, paved the way for a stand off between the government and the PSC. Chandy told reporters at the post Cabinet-briefing here that during the previous LDF Government’s tenure lists had been extended up to 17 months and the PSC, which had a majority of the UDF nominees then, had co-operated with the government decision. ‘’It is not for any individual that the demand for the extension is being made by the government but for scores of youths who have no avenues for government jobs now, as no recruitment had taken place since April, 2011. And in the current scenario, the issue was created by the LDF Government’s decision to go for pension-age unification. The LDF nominated members in the PSC are saying that they are following a party directive. It is not in matters like this that politics should be played,’’ Chandy said. “The government does not want to question the independent character of the PSC in any manner. Let the members make an introspection. Jobless youths in the rank list are remaining outside for no fault of theirs. The PSC is duty bound to answer whether the responsibilities entrusted with it are being discharged,’’ the Chief Minister said. He said that the Cabinet has decided to request the PSC once again to take a favourable stance on the issue. The Cabinet also made a climb down by deciding not to ask for the extension of the lists which are pending for more than four and a half years. If a live list of the PSC is there for a given set of vacancies, then also the list sought to be extended can be shelved. Otherwise, the validity of all other lists should be extended to April 30, 2012, Chandy said. “The government expects a reply from the PSC in this regard. The next Cabinet will discuss the matter again,’’ the Chief Minister said. Chandy said that the Cabinet asked the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting of Secretaries of various departments on Wednesday itself so as to report all vacancies arising out till March 31, within three days. The vacancies will be reported to the PSC immediately.Award for YesudasThe Cabinet decided to bestow renowned singer K J Yesudas with a Lifetime Achievement Award, carrying a purse of Rs 1.5 lakh and a scroll of honour in recognition of his yeomen services for the past 50 years as a representative of the state in the fields of art and social service as well as in fostering communal harmony.Appointed DGFormer ADGP Desmond Netto has been appointed as the director-general of the National Games slated to be held here.
