THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keralites might pride themselves to be literate and computer savvy. But when it comes to obtaining birth, death and marriage certificates, it appears they still prefer the handwritten application and old-fashioned queue. Reason: only a few are aware of an online facility which is available for procuring the certificates.Though the online certificate facility was introduced in phases in the 1,138 local bodies in the state, only five per cent of the Keralites are using it. The Information Kerala Mission (IKM), which was entrusted with uploading the details of births, deaths and marriages, had completed data entry from 2005 till date. Now it is in the process of uploading data from 1970.IKM executive chairman and director M Shamsuddin said that internet connectivity has been provided to almost all the local bodies. . ‘’Even techies do not know that a certificate can be received at the click of a mouse. The public still approach the local bodies for these certificates causing more workload for the employees,’’ he said. According to Shamsuddin, such a facility given to all the local bodies is not implemented anywhere else in the country. The details of births and deaths can be registered using SMS facility too. Once the birth of a child is registered, the date of immunisation vaccination will be communicated to the parent through SMS. The local bodies will also get the information of the number of births and deaths in their area. People can log in on to the website www.infokerala.org and submit the details of the birth or death and a print-out of a valid certificate can be taken. Even marriage certificates can be obtained in 30 minutes after registration. After the engagement of a couple, they can upload the details on the website and after marriage sufficient documents have to be furnished at the local body to get the certificate very fast, Shamsuddin said. There are also provisions to remit payment of taxes to the local bodies online.
