More than 20 primary school students miraculou-sly escaped from a school van that suddenly caught fire in Tirunelveli district on Thursday morning.
The presence of mind of local people, who pulled out the children in time saved them, police said.
The private van was engaged by parents in Alavanthankulam and neighb-ouring areas to send their children to private English medium schools in Thalaiyuthu.
On Thursday, around 8.30 a.m. the driver Mariappan had stopped the van at Therkumalai Colony in Kela Thengalam to pick up some students. While they were about to board the vehicle, a spark in the van’s battery wire led to a fire.
“More than 20 students, all of them studying in primary classes, were inside the van when the fire spread. Local people immediately rushed to their aid and managed to pull out the children from the van and moved them to safety,” a police officer said.
Eyewitnesses said it was nothing short of a miracle that saved the young lives as the fire spread fast and the van was gutted before Fire and Rescue Services Personnel could douse the flames.
School bags containing notebooks and lunch boxes were destroyed. Curiously, no police complaint was registered in connection with the incident till late Thursday evening.
