CHENNAI : A 42-year-old loader died in a private hospital on Monday after a parcel weighing about 300kg fell on him while it was being unloaded at the cargo service centre near the Chennai airport. His family has sought compensation.According to the police, E Madhavan of Perumal Koil Street, Pudhumanavilangai, Tiruvallur district, was a contract labourer in charge of loading and unloading international cargo at the cargo service centre at the airport where he had worked for 10 years.On May 7, Madhavan was on duty when a load of parcels arrived at a centre on a trolley attached to a tractor. At around 5.55 pm, the 42-year-old bent to remove the chain linking the trolley and the tractor, when a parcel weighing about 300kg fell on Madhavan’s back, injuring his neck and damaging his spinal cord.He was first rushed to the St Thomas Mount hospital for first aid before being taken to a private hospital at Teynampet. He was treated there for close to two weeks before he died on Monday morning, police said. Following the filing complaint of a complaint on May 8, a case was registered under IPC sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). After the loader’s death, police altered this to IPC 287 and 304 A (causing death by negligence). Police said they are likely to make an arrest.Madhavan’s elder brother Vijayan, who came to collect his brother’s body, told Express that his brother was the sole breadwinner of the family. Madhavan is survived by his wife and two children. He said that only a compensation from the authorities could save Madhavan’s family.Mishap on Tarmac In a freak incident, an empty bus belonging to a private airline, plowed into an Air India tractor near bay 57 at the Chennai airport. A worker identified as Thangavelu (28), was injured and has been receiving medical attention.
