Hygiene in Indian street food has become a hot topic, with vendors under scrutiny for not maintaining proper standards. But the situation took a humourous turn when Africans began mocking Indian street food through funny TikTok videos. However, Desis weren’t ones to take it lying down; they fired back at these viral videos, highlighting the irony of those facing food shortages making fun of a country they couldn’t surpass.
In a viral thread, a TikToker was caught mixing anything and everything in a messy setup, using bare hands to serve a dish that nobody dared to try. The user who posted the thread on ‘X’, formerly Twitter, remarked, “This is an entire genre of parody video now, it’s not a one-off comedy skit some guy made once. Many people are making them!”

Adding to the saga, another video surfaced featuring a man with his feet in the food he was serving, showcasing the ongoing trend of Africans poking fun at Indian street food.

True to their nature, Desis didn’t hold back, serving up their own brand of humour. One wrote, “When you make a reel using all the food your entire village had and then starve for week. Clowns.” Another pondered, “Okay but from where they got food to shoot this video?” A third chimed in, “No issues in making fun of each other, it heals. Only issue is those poor kid will have to eat all this after the reels, it’s their whole month’s ration.”
Too much food wastage considering the fact there’s always a shortage of food in the African continent lol.— Aanchal (@AanchalXIV) December 30, 2023
Do they even have so much food to waste to shoot this satire?— Sai Ram B (@SaiRamSays) December 30, 2023
Parents across India tell their children to respect food and never to waste any as many in Africa don’t get to eat food.— Amaresh (@ProgDoc14) December 31, 2023
Amidst the banter, there were voices advocating for a focus on improving the quality of Indian street food rather than engaging in a war of words. “It’s time to realize that something is terribly wrong with your street food when the guys who don’t even have anything to eat start mocking it.” emphasised one user.

Another bluntly stated, “Lot of people are mocking Africa…. But for all our loud talk on internet and tech and etc… majority of India is downright filthy and unhygienic. That’s a fact.”

Instead of trolling Africans, we can improve our quality right ??? They didn’t make any false accusations right ???— Ak (@PeakyThala) December 31, 2023
All in all, it’s crystal clear that Indian street food needs a sprinkle of hygiene, and vendors need to swap out the weird experiments for a menu makeover that leaves everyone hungry for more quality bites—because who needs bizarre dishes that not even the bravest taste buds dare to tango with!
