Mice, hamsters all make great small pets. They won't eat you out of house and you can buy them their own pad without going bankrupt.

New Delhi: Size does matter and sometimes the smaller the better. Say good-bye to man's best friend and hello to the wonderful world of pocket-sized pets.

Rabbits, mice, hamsters all make great small pets. And it's not only their size that makes them a perfect companion.

They won't eat you out of house and home and you can buy them their own pad and wheels without going bankrupt.

Owner Petland, a Delhi-based pet shop, Sudhir Sharma says, "You can keep these mini-pets in the room and it doesn't take much to for their upkeep. The only thing that needs to be done is clean their bedding. Just scoop it out and it's very easy."

With white mice on sale for Rs 300 and hamsters for Rs 1000, these little pets also leave the wallet feeling pretty healthy. And one doesn't have to worry about their health either.

Hamsters maintain their svelte figures without making you sweat it out with them.

However, if the hamster is too small for your liking, then a guinea pig's the pet for you. All one needs to do is to make sure they have a dry cage and plenty of water and they're good to go.

And if you're not into fur and feathers are more your style, then maybe a bird's the pet for you. But before you get yourself a bird, here's what you should know.

Vice-President, Friendicos, Geeta Seshamani says, "Aviary bred birds are the only birds that one is permitted to keep according to the law. Any indigenous Indian species captured from the wild are absolutely taboo, they should not be touched. People should be aware of this and not buy them or sell them."

So if your heart desires a hamster, your gut calls for a guinea pig or your mind for a mouse don't delay, go buy one, because it's time you started living life pint-size.

What's your reaction?
