THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In protest against the UDF Government’s alleged move to sabotage the SSA project, the Kerala School Teachers Association (KSTA) will organise marches and stage dharnas in front of the state and district offices on Saturday. KSTA general secretary M Shajahan and president K N Sukumaran told a news conference that the SSA project which has the potential to improve the academic standards and physical conditions in the general education sector has almost become defunct from block to the state level. They said that instead of engaging academic experts as programme officers at the state office, six out of nine programme officers are DEOs. A junior lecturer of DIET and two high school teachers have been appointed as programme officers. One officer in charge of English language was not a degree holder in English but a degree holder in political science. The person who is in charge of pedagogy has not taken any steps to formulate any programme so far. They alleged that as of now the state office of SSA had literally become inactive. They pointed out that the conditions were not different in the district offices. Out of the 162 block offices, 60 of them had no programme officers from June to November. Almost half of the vacancies of BPOs are remaining vacant. Out of the 1200 posts of BRC trainers, there are 400 vacancies. The SSA project had `476 crore worth of projects to be implemented in the current academic year. Though eight months had elapsed, the government had not spent even Rs 100 crore so far. They said the project could have been implemented in a better manner if all academic experts available in the sector were involved. The Rashtriya Madhayama Siksha Abhiyan activities also has not been initiated so far. KSTA had written to the Education Minister in this regard.
