New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has once again slammed the prosecution for botching up the Jessica Lall murder case at the trial stage.
The court asked why no action was taken against witnesses who turned hostile and also pulled up the prosecution for misleading the court on testimonies of key witnesses.
The Lall family had earlier feared that the accused had walked free because the prosecution made no efforts to nail them and this has now been confirmed by the Delhi High Court.
Says Defence counsel of the Jessica Lall murder case, R D Rana, "The High Court said that the trial courts' judgement can not be called perverse as the court's findings were based on what the public prosecutor told the court. The prosecution mislead the court."
The court slammed the trial court's special public prosecutor after it was revealed that Bina Ramani - one of the key witnesses in the case - had actually told the police that Manu Sharma had shot Jessica Lall.
However, in court she went back on this statement and the prosecutor made no efforts to confront her. Infact the prosecutor told the court that it was merely Bina's feeling that Manu had shot Jessica.
The Lalls, Hussains and the Mattoos have all suffered at the hands of a weak prosecution and if the High Court's observation on Thursday is anything to go by, may be its about time that people hire their own lawyers than depend on the prosecutors to get them justice.
