New Delhi: Heavy rains forced schools and colleges shut in Mumbai for the sixth consecutive day on Thursday as the nationwide rain death toll rose to more than 250.
Though water had cleared up in Andheri, Lower Parel, Colaba suburbs during the night, authorities have left the decision of whether or not to open schools and colleges to them.
Transport facilities are also limping back to normalcy and local trains, also called Mumbai lifelines, are running on time.
However, the respite could well be short-lived. The Met Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains on Thursday.
Mumbai’s civic authorities advised residents to stay home.
"We are constantly clearing water-logged roads," Mumbai's Municipal Commissioner, Johny Joseph, said.
Fire officials cleared uprooted trees blocking main roads, while owners of flooded shops in low-lying areas opened to check their losses.
Flood warnings and alerts have also been sounded in parts of Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. At least 20 people were killed in torrential rains across Orissa.
The deaths in Orissa, which occurred Tuesday, were mostly from landslides or drowning, Orissa's Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal said.
Six people also died in Karnataka, when a landslide destroyed two homes.
There were no new reports of casualties in Mumbai, where the latest spell of rains killed seven on Monday.
