CHENNAI: The State government has earmarked Rs 977 crore for relaying roads in various parts to a stretch of 5,000 km, Highways Minister K Palanisamy said here on Monday. The funds for this has been allocated under the non-Plan works to maintain bridges and roads.Under the Comprehensive Road and Traffic Planning (CRTP), 1,667 km of roads would be widened at a cost of Rs1,900 crore and 3,675 km of roads would be upgraded and safety measures would be undertaken in 244 bridges, the Minister said replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for his department in the State Assembly.Historic buildings under the control of the Highways Department would be repaired without affecting their antique value and their history would be documented, the Minister said.REPAIRING DAMS: PWD Minister KV Ramalingam said dams and irrigation canals in various parts of the State would be repaired at a cost of `Rs 2.76 crore with the financial assistance of NABARD. The measure would benefit irrigation areas over an extent of 50,332 acres.
