Government justifies appointment of Letika Saran

CHENNAI: The TN government has justified the selection and appointment of Letika Saran as Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu. In its counteraffidavit filed in response to a writ petition from Letika Saran, the government stated that it had fully complied with the directions of the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh case.
Following a direction from the Madras High Court on October 8 last year, the government carefully considered the panel names R Nataraj, K Vijayakumar and Letika Saran recommended by the UPSC and appointed Letika as the DGP on November 27, last year. The compliance report was also filed before the High Court on Deember 8, 2010.The State was at liberty to select and appoint any one of the three senior most officers, empanelled by the UPSC, for the post of DGP, the counter added.
