It was over two decades ago that Vidya Sagar was started in a garage, with a mother and a child with a disability. So, it seemed only invariable that when the staff of the organisation were drumming up fundraising ideas recently, the idea of a ‘garage sale’ caught their fancy. Principal Kalpana Rao says, “All the proceeds from purchases will go to our educational facility.” On the look out for items that were new, unused and in good condition, Rohini Ramesh, Co-ordinator, Resources, reveals that the response has been tremendous. “In just two weeks, we’ve had contributions from close to 250 people including staff, parents and well wishers.” These range from junk jewellery to wooden cots, electronics, arts and crafts and perhaps the most unexpected of all – an ice cream maker!
Vidya Sagar’s ‘garage sale with a difference’ is promised to be a cross between a sale and a mela. “We also plan to have some food stalls for people,” Rohini adds. “The reason we identified with the idea was because it also makes also for a fun bonding activity with the community. So hopefully there will be many people getting to know each other more as well.” The prices of the items on sale will range between `100 and `1,000. Well, one thing is for certain.
The garage sale will be held on September 29 and 30 between 10 am and 3.30 pm at Vidya Sagar, No.1, Ranjith Road, Kotturpuram. For details, contact 9884056151.
